Welcome to the UCA Chemistry Department. We are glad to have this electronic opportunity to tell you a bit about the department. The chemistry department is located in Laney Hall, an attractive Georgian-style chemistry building opened in January, 1995.
We take justifiable pride in the high quality of our undergraduate-only chemistry program, certified by the American Chemical Society. In its 1997 review of the department, an external committee under the auspices of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education cited in its report that the UCA Chemistry Department faculty "is to be commended on the decision to focus attention upon buiding an excellent undergraduate program." Approximately 8-12 chemistry majors have graduated per year during the past several years.
A chemistry major takes one of two tracks: an ACS-approved track, and an alternative track. The two tracks are parallel until the Junior/Senior year. The ACS-track focuses on additional upper division course requirements and more research experience.
The BS in Chemistry degree offers a number of career options. Such options include attending medical or dental school, pursuing graduate study in chemistry, working in industrial and government laboratories, or teaching in the public schools.
The seventeendepartment faculty members, all with Ph.D.s degrees in chemistry, work closely with students in the classroom, and in teaching and research laboratories as well. A significant number of chemistry majors participate in research with faculty members. Some students start doing research as early as the sophomore year. If you want to know more specifics about departmental faculty, check the individual descriptions of our
faculty members.
I invite you to visit and learn more about UCA and the chemistry program here. Scholarship aid is available to qualified students interested in majoring in chemistry.
