2008 State Contest Entry Information


 

Each region of the AJAS may enter in the State Competition the first, second, and third place regional winners of each category.

 

1.  Entries will be accepted in the following categories:  Behavioral and Social Science, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Space Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Medicine and Health, Microbiology, Physics, and Zoology. 

2.  Entrants can register by mail or online.  Online registration is preferred.  The deadline for registration is March 21, 2008.

3.  Abstracts for both mail in and online entries should be emailed to ncater@uca.edu no later than March 21, 2008.  Please send abstracts as Word documents.  (Since some characters and symbols are occasionally displayed incorrectly when pasted into the online registration form, this will ensure that the judges receive accurate copies of all abstracts prior to the competition.)

4.  The entry fee is $12.00.  A check payable to "Arkansas Junior Academy of Science" should be mailed to:

5.  There is no separate category for team projects. Teams will present in the category of their project. Each team must select one member of the team to make the oral presentation. All team members must be present at the presentation and be available for questioning by the judges. 

6.  Each presenter will be allotted eight minutes to speak.  Four minutes will be allotted for questions from the audience and judges.  All presentations should be made using PowerPoint.  Entrants should bring electronic copies of presentations on a CD or flash drive.  Computers (PC) will be provided.

7.  The category presentations will begin at 9:00 AM and end about 11:00 AM, depending upon the number of entries.  The presentations to determine the overall winner will begin at noon and conclude about 3:30 PM.  A detailed schedule of presentation times will be posted on the AJAS web page prior to the competition.

8.  Entries from students in a region which did not hold a regional competition will be accepted under the following conditions:

a.  The student must follow all of the rules for an entry into the state AJAS competition. 

b.  The entry must be accompanied by a letter from a teacher or local scientist other than the sponsoring teacher. This person should not be related to the student. This letter must state that the writer deems the work of sufficient quality to be entered into competition at the state level. 

c.  The entries will be accepted by the State Director on a first come basis. Only the first three entries in a category from a region will be accepted. Other entries will be returned either at the State Competition or by mail.
