Graphing Assignment

All graphs must

·        be prepared using electronic tools (ie. Excel, Cricket Graph, Quattro or similar)    My instructions will refer to Excel tools.

·        have the correct parameters on the X and Y axes (remember the convention “Y is a function of X”)

·        have clear labels on both axes including appropriate units

·        have meaningful titles

·        be scaled so as to fill the page

·        show individual data points with dots, squares, or similar

·        have best fit lines when requested

Your written responses to the asked questions should be written on a separate sheet of paper
attached to your graphs.   Linked here are figures showing some of the Excel steps needed for this assignment.

Graphs 1 and 2:   Relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas.

Use the data from Table 9.2 p 347 to construct these graphs.

Construct two graphs, one plotting P vs V and the other plotting P vs 1/V.

Connect the data points with a smooth curve or best fit line.
Is gas pressure directly or indirectly related to volume?  Explain how your graphs show this.

Graph 3:  Temperature dependence of the vapor pressure of water

Use the data from Table 10.8 p 398 to construct this graph.

Plot vapor pressure as a function of temperature.

Connect the data points with a smooth curve.

Is vapor pressure directly or indirectly related to temperature?  Explain how your graph illustrates this.

Graph 4:  Dependence of boiling point on molar mass of nonpolar molecules

Use the data from Table 10.3 p 388 to construct this graph.

Does your graph indicate a direct or indirect relationship between boiling point and molar mass?

Graph 5:  Dependence of reactant and product concentrations with time

Use the data from Table 12.1 p 473 to construct this graph.

Plot all three concentrations, one reactant and two products on the same graph vs time.

This is most easily done by making separate columns for each and then adding them as different series.

Be certain that each curve is labeled accordingly.
