The "molecule of the week" (week of July 29, 2002) featured on the American Chemical Society's web page was a new artificial sweetener called neotame recently approved by the FDA.  What is the rationale behind the substitution of artificial sweeteners for sucrose (table sugar)?  Does an equal mass of an artificial sweetener release fewer calories than sucrose during combustion/cellular respiration?
