Comments about Quiz 1: Some are leaving lecture not clear about things we are discussing. This means they face things on the quiz that were discussed during lecture but that they were unprepared to face. These people should be using my office time (time they already paid for to receive my help). Re. Q1 on the quiz: Air is “thinner” or “less dense” at high altitudes, meaning there are fewer total molecules in a sample of high altitude air. The relative amounts of N2 and O2 are the same high and low. At lower altitudes, where there are more total molecules (more “dense”) there must also be more N2 and O2 but still in the same proportion as on a mountain top. On the mountain top you are gasping for air (oxygen) not because the % O2 is lower, but because the total available O2 is lower (and less N2). The same % O2 but of a small total amount of air leaves less O2 available for your body.
